Probate research is complex work which often extends over several years. The heir locator receives a performance-related commission for his work. If payment of the inheritance to the heirs does not result the heir locator does not receive a professional fee. Therefore the heir locator, in settled case law, was conceded a performance fee of 25 % and, in difficult cases and cases involving a foreign element, up to approx. 33 % (plus VAT in each case). The fee is only due upon payment of the inheritance; the heir does not have to make any advance payments to reputable heir locators! In addition, the fees of the heir locator are recognized as a legacy liability by the fiscal authorities so that the heir locator’s fee has a tax-reducing effect in the determination of the inheritance tax.
